Type: Museum Nonprofit
Founded in 1944, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is one of the nation’s leading science museums, a world-class tourist attraction, and an award-winning educational resource for the kid in each of us. OMSI operates the largest museum-based outdoor science education program in the country and provides traveling and community outreach programs that bring science learning opportunities to schools and community organizations in nearly every county in Oregon.
The organization relies on its wireless network to manage programs and payroll, communicate with employees and volunteers, and serve the public across its 219,000 Square foot facility.
The wireless network began to degrade in reliability. Employees and visitors had difficulty connecting, or were disconnected randomly from the network. The wireless controller for the large deployment appeared to be maxed out, despite being rated to handle the load.
CloudMinders began by analyzing the current wireless network in depth. They created a complete wireless map of the 3 floor facility and of key outdoor locations. After creating the map, it became readily apparent where the weak coverage areas were. They installed new WAPS to cover the weak spots. Simultaneously, they concluded the controller was not acting as it should, and began technical troubleshooting with the manufacturer. OMSI was faced with a costly controller replacement, so CloudMinders diagnosed the difficult to replicate problem and determined that the flaw was due to a faulty firmware revision. After installing the required firmware, the controller began to function correctly.
The organization's wireless network is speedy and reliable thanks to expanded wireless coverage. They no longer experience dropouts or unexplained connectivity issues. They now know exactly what their wireless coverage looks like, which is invaluable for expansion planning.
“Solving the various issues around our Wi-Fi network has been a critical step in not only improving customer service but also improving the reliability of all our network dependent assets including a large chunk of our exhibits and all of our digital signage system. The CloudMinders team was quick, efficient and easy to do business with”.
